Traditional or Modern

In order to understand the difference between Traditional Martial Arts (TMA) and modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) it's important to realize that without TMA there is NO MMA.

One of the foundations of MMA is boxing and wrestling. These arts are older than history itself. There is not much more traditional than prehistoric. In fact, if you were to trace the routes of the UFC and professional Boxing organizations their roots would date back to Victorian prizefighting, and back to the first Olympics (there was almost certainly a prize to be won in Ancient Greek Olympic events like wrestling and boxing), and further beyond written word.

The primary goal of MMA is winning competitions. The goal of any sport is to win. All good practices become sportified: wrestling, boxing, karate, fencing, long distance shooting to name a few. The fact is, that MMA isn't modern at all, it's ancient. And Karate isn't merely ancient. It's modern. It has kept up with the times and continues to prove its effectiveness in MMA to this day.

So, when choosing the right martial art for you, ask yourself:

"Is this enjoyable?"

"Is the instructor knowledgeable?"

"Is it affordable and worth investing time and money?"

"How can I sign up for a karate class at Scott's TODAY?"
